How It Started

The work began with environmental cleanup along the shores of Lake Michigan, where former industrial land required extensive restoration before any development could begin. Fixing these sites first was the crucial first step, laying the groundwork for responsible redevelopment and long-term investment.

Since 2010, HSCR has united public and private partners to take a broad approach to community development. This includes attracting new investment, boosting tourism and the local economy, expanding housing options, and creating parks, trails and community spaces that people can enjoy year-round.

Thanks to strong partnerships and sustained effort, more than $350 million has been invested in community projects and new businesses across Berrien County. Neighborhoods, downtown areas and public spaces have all grown stronger, one project at a time.
